Price Guide: How Much Do Walk-In Tubs Cost?

As you shop for the right walk-in bath, it’s important to know what goes into your tub’s total cost. The price can vary depending on the size, type, brand, add-on features, installation and labor costs and more. You can generally expect to pay less than $10,000 for a standard walk-in tub without installation, and up to $25,000+ for a premium tub with additional features and installation included. While many factors impact the total cost, the type of tub has the greatest influence.

In this price guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about the cost of a walk-in bath so you can make an informed decision.

With KOHLER’s Price Promise, you are quoted one exact price that factors in everything from the custom options you’ve selected for your Walk-In Bath to the delivery and installation cost.

Installation Costs of a Walk-in Tub

The average cost to install a walk-in tub lies between $2,500 and $8,000, depending on the complexity of the job. You’ll absorb more labor costs if you need to reconfigure plumbing, install an electrical motor or remodel your bathroom to fit a larger-than-standard tub. Below are a few factors that can impact the cost of installation:

  • Size of Your Tub:

Most walk-in tubs, such as the KOHLER Walk-In Bath, easily fit in the footprint of a traditional tub (60" L x 30"-32" W) and won’t require extensive renovations. If you install a larger tub, like a bariatric model, you’ll pay higher labor costs to move walls, fixtures or cabinets.

  • Plumbing and Electrical Upgrades

For specialty walk-in tubs like those with air or whirlpool jets, installation costs can be higher because of the extra electrical and plumbing work it takes to set up those features.

  • Water Heater Capacity

Walk-in baths require more water than traditional tubs. Most manufacturers recommend that you have a new 50+ gallon water tank in order to maintain the preferred water temperature in the bath. This could cost up to $3,000.

  • Removal of the Old Tub

Some companies charge an additional fee of $250-$700 to remove the old tub before installing your new walk-in tub. KOHLER includes this step as part of their professional installation service.3

In some cases, the cost of installation may be factored into the price of your walk-in tub. Make sure to ask your sales representative for details.

Cost of Maintenance for a Walk-In Tub

Maintenance costs are typically low for walk-in tubs. Jetted tubs or those with electric features will require extra upkeep—every couple of months with specialty cleaners and every few years by a plumber or electrician for routine jet and motor repairs.

Quality manufacturers and installation professionals often provide long-term customer service, maintenance and warranties for their walk-in tub to give you peace of mind for years to come.

Will Insurance or Medicare Cover the Cost of a Walk-in Tub?

Medicare does not cover the cost or installation of a walk-in tub, except in rare situations.5 This is because a walk-in tub is not considered “durable medical equipment,” which is a device designed to support a medical condition. However, you may find financial assistance through other programs, including:

  • Medicaid

This program is more likely to pay for a walk-in tub through opportunities like a home and community-based services (HCBS) waiver.

  • Department of Veterans Affairs

If you’re a veteran, you may qualify to receive financial assistance for a walk-in tub through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

  • US Department of Agriculture

The USDA offers loans and grants to low-income older adults in rural areas that cover safety-based home repairs, improvements or modifications like a walk-in bath.

For more information, contact the individual programs and departments to see if you qualify for financial assistance. You can also read our blog posts on Medicare and veteran benefits to learn more.

Features to Consider

Most walk-in tubs come with basic safety features. More advanced models like hydrotherapy and premium tubs are designed with special comfort features in addition to standard safety features. You also have the opportunity to customize your walk-in tub with extra accessories based on your needs and preferences. Here are some common walk-in tub features and accessories to consider:

  • Safety Features
  • Comfort Features
  • Additional Accessories

Low Step-In Threshold: The standard threshold height is 3 to 7 inches but can vary by brand. A lower step-in reduces your risk of falling. The KOHLER® Walk-In Bath has one of the lowest step-ins in the industry at 3 inches.

Handrails or Grab Bars: Most tubs include built-in grab bars inside the bath for stable transitioning. Some may be designed with an indented handrail on the rim of the tub for secure movement.

Wide Door: An extra-wide door is designed to give you easy access to the walk-in tub and may feature integrated safety rails and grips to provide additional stability while entering and exiting the tub.

Built-In Seat: An integrated seat helps you get in and out of the bath independently and with ease. The extra-wide seat of the KOHLER Walk-In Bath is up to 30 percent deeper than most walk-in tubs on the market for the ideal reclining position and optimal water depth.

Air and/or Whirlpool Jets: Air jets release tiny bubbles to deliver a gentle, relaxing massage, while hydrotherapy or whirlpool jets provide an intense, directed massage to sore muscles and joints. The KOHLER Walk-In Bath combines 10 strategically-placed whirlpool jets and BubbleMassage air jets to give you the ultimate spa-like bathing experience.

Heated Backrest: Heated surfaces keep your neck and back warm as the bath fills and drains. The KOHLER Walk-In Bath’s Bask® heated backrest allows you to toggle between three levels of heat at the touch of a button.

Handshower: A handshower helps you rinse hard-to-reach areas with multiple spray settings.

Fast Drain: Most walk-in baths are designed with fast filling and draining capability for a more enjoyable experience from start to finish.

Control Panel: An ergonomic control panel inside the bath allows you to adjust heated surfaces and jets to your preferences.

Self-Cleaning: A self-cleaning or ozone sanitizer system clears bacteria and viruses for better hygiene.

Chromatherapy: Chromatherapy systems use colored lights to improve relaxation and your bathing experience.

Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy systems infuse essential oils in the bathwater to create a relaxing soak.

Extra Grab Bars: You can buy additional grab bars if needed for $25 to $370 each, depending on the length and finish.3 This provides extra peace of mind knowing you’ll have a stable grip at all times during your bath.

Bath Walls: Decorative bath walls add a pop to your bathroom and allow you to express your personality and design taste. The KOHLER Walk-In Bath can be customized with 12 durable LuxStone® bath wall designs. Depending on the material you choose, the price can vary widely, from $300 for an acrylic surround to $2,000 for stone.

Shower Option: Some walk-in tubs have the option to become a walk-in tub shower combo. You can outfit the KOHLER Walk-In Bath with the Shower Package, which features a gooseneck shower arm and KOHLER Bath Screen. This upgrade gives you the ability to enjoy a traditional standing shower as well as a luxurious soak, improving the tub’s versatility and function.

What Are the Alternatives to a Walk-in Tub?

Walk-in tubs are not the only safe bathing solution available. Learn about alternative options to a walk-in bath.

  • Assisted Living & In-Home Care
  • In-Home Alternatives
  • Walk-In Showers

Assisted Living And In-Home Care

Professional, Long-Term Care Services

Type Price Range
Home Health Aide $65,538 per year7
Assisted Living Facility $57,289 per year7
Nursing Home $115,00 per year7
*Estimates are the national annual median cost in 2023

Older adults who need help with medical and/or personal care may benefit from in-home or long-term residential care. Unlike a walk-in bath, which is a one-time purchase, care services require yearly payments. A person's individual needs and level of independence will determine the type of care and assistance needed.

In-Home Alternatives

Bath Safety Equipment to Improve Home Accessibility

Type Price Range
Bath / Shower Chair $35 - $7653
Transfer Bench $50 - $3503
Walk-In Tub Conversion Kit $800-1,8003
Bathtub Lift $380 - $2,5003

Bath chairs, transfer benches and other bath safety equipment allow individuals with various mobility needs to shower or bathe in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. These in-home alternatives are ideal for people who consider safety a top priority and can go without enhanced comfort features.

Roll-In Or Walk-In Showers

Low Barrier or Curbless Showers for Enhanced Independence and Safety

Accessible showers like walk-in and roll-in showers promote independence and safety. The main difference between the two is the curb height—walk-ins feature a low-step base, while roll-ins are barrier-free and may be wheelchair accessible. If you want a safe bathing solution without the added comfort features, you may consider a shower instead of a walk-in tub. KOHLER offers the LuxStone shower as another safe and beautiful walk-in solution for those who have mobility challenges or are not ready to purchase a walk-in tub. You can expect to pay between $5,000 to $30,000+ for a roll-in or walk-in shower without installation.6
